A Day in the Amazon River

Located on the Rio Negro in Manaus, the capital city of the state of Amazonas, this port is the commercial center for ocean vessels as well as local transportation for the entire Amazon Basin.

Here the Solimões and Negro rivers meet but their waters don't mix for about 3.5 miles.

Along the Amazon River, many communities live floating in the river. In the Catalão community we stopped to fish pirarucu.

Ao longo do rio Amazonas muitas comunidades vivem flutuantes no rio. Na comunidade de Catalão nós paramos para pescar pirarucu.

In the Ecological Park of Lake Janauari we saw several bird species and also had hands-on experience holding a sloth and snake as well as seeing several monkey species on our way to the giant water lillies.

Swimming with the pink dolphins (botos) was an amazing experience.

A visit to the native community of Dessana taught us a bit about that tribe's history and traditions. In the end our hosts took us dancing.
